5 ways to use iGoogle

iGoogle is something that I knew nothing about until tonight! I am impressed with all that it can do! The possibilities for the classroom are endless. Students in even elementary school can set up their own igoogle to use for homework and in class assignments. In geography or science, the students could monitor the weather forecast on their homepage. There is also an option to translate the text into different languages for learning in say a Spanish class. Teachers could encourage their students to view newsclips as well. For subjects like English and grammar, you could add "word of the day" to your homepage so students could increase their vocabulary. There is a literature quote option too. The student could view a quote from literature each day. One day the classroom is going to be so advanced!!!

iPhone

The new iPhone is the next amazing thing in today's society. Soon, it will be a new "must" for all adults, teenagers, and eventually children. These phones could be a huge asset to the school system, if used in the right way. They are very equipped to help students learn more efficiently. Our world is beginning to come into a era where people are helpless if they do not have some sort of technological computer, such as the iPhone, present with them at all times.

Week 5

By using spreadsheets, students are able to see the information more clearly and easily. In subjects such as math and chemistry, numbers can gets confusing, but in a chart, they are much more readily used.
Spreadsheets are also a good way of getting students to organize their work. When someone types the information in the computer, it becomes jumbled and disorganized, but that problem is solved for many people if use spreadsheets.

Week 4 Part 2

One of the newest projects with integrating education with fun is by using ipods. Developers are trying to allow students to use ipods to help them with their studies. In one study, the teacher records herself reading a book. Then, the track is put on an ipod for the student to listen to and follow along with while looking at the book. This helps that student to enhance their vocabulary and listening skills.

Students who used this method of learning gained skills such as “accountability, adaptability, personal productivity, personal responsibility, self direction”. This discovery may open a door for children to learn more easily and efficiently as well as getting the student excited about education. Technology is the new fad in today’s society. What a great tool it will be when we finally learn all it’s possibilities!

Week 4 Part 1

Seymour Papert had the idea of allowing children to use computers in the early 60's. No one thought this idea would ever become possible, however, because of the expense. Papert wanted to use computers to enhance students’ learning as well as creativity. Even though this was not completely accomplished, he did experiment with children first using a computer to make graphics and practice writing also.

Papert is seen today as “the world's foremost expert on how technology can provide new ways to learn”. With his educational projects all over the world, he made many advances in technology. He is finding the latest ways to incorporate education and computers for children. Seymour Papert is a dedicated professor that has high goals for students of today’s time.

Week 3 Part 1 Paragraph 2

Brenda Dyck, an elementary school teacher, first introduced blogging to her enrichment class. She was surprised and excited at their thoughts. Her purpose for their blogs was to encourage them to write their thoughts regarding certain subjects. Then, she would read their blogs and respond, asking them questions and encouraging them. http://www.education-world.com/a_curr/voice/voice123.shtml

Week 3 Part1

Mrs. Lowe’s middle school class enjoys blogging! Mrs. Lowe posts her “classroom countdowns”, announcements, assignments for students, and also her favorite books she recommends for extra reading. She says that although most of her fellow teachers say blogging is “messy” or “too much work”, she thinks it is a great way to get students to participate. http://plowe91.bravejournal.com

Post 1 Week 2

"ACCESS provides high- quality classroom courses and teachers, via technology." Because of some schools' low income, they are not able to offer as many courses to students. Alabama's goal is to "provide equal access to high quality instruction to improve student achievement through distance learning opportunities." ACCESS provides remediation courses, advanced diploma courses, and dual enrollment courses as well as other learning opportunities. Teachers benefit also with ACCESS' additional teaching tools.

This "distance learning" technique where teachers and students are not in the same classroom, are available as web-based classroom or video conferencing. Video conferencing can be a very good thing. It can provide more teachers, team-teaching between schools and developing teachers to be apart of another school culture. Some of the challenges, however, is that organization is key, and keeping the students interested and feel apart may be difficult. Students' benfits from ACCESS are limitless. Hopefully Alabama will promote ACCESS more and more to help students and teachers.

Post 2 Week 1

When I begin to teach, ALEX will be one of the many things I remember to use. With all of this site's options and capabilities, beginning teachers will succeed quickly and excel far beyond most because of the endless opportunities for information and help offered. I would begin my making myself an ALEX account and working on lesson plans for my classroom. I am sure that my students will find the practice problems and review questions very useful from this site as well. The web links would also provide me with additional information for my class, such as teaching tips and strategies.

I plan to continue in my own education and receive my master's degree in education. One day I might want to pursue some sort of administrative position in the school system, so ALEX's information regarding professional learning and distance learning. The distance learning interests me and if I was ever in a position of authority, I might use this link to promote online courses for my students. The possibilities are endless when it comes to this simple website. Teachers and students alike are likely to benefit from the information given and hopefully, I will become very familiar with it in the near future when getting ready for my own classroom.

Post 1 Week 1

The Alabama Learning Exchange, also known as ALEX, is a website that aids teachers. From visiting this site, teachers can choose from a variety of different help links. The "course of study" gives teachers practice problems and questions for each grade level in every subject. There are additional web links posted on ALEX that would further aid them also. ACCESS learning is the option for students to engage in online courses. This is also offered on this site.

Some other things teachers may take advantage of on this website, www.alex.state.al.us, are the personal workspace and professional learning links. A teacher can create her own personal account through ALEX and learn how to create, submit, and improve her lesson plans. The professional learning link desplays the Alabama Department of Education Program Websites to equip teachers with learning tools, ideas, and teaching tips. Overall, this site is an excellent source for teachers and students to use all over the U.S.
